Review:
This book is a perfect read since the situation in this book is similar to the pandemic right now, hospitals are full of patients and there’s lack of doctors, equipment, facilities and beds for patients.
In these depressing time, the author gives us a glimpse of 1920s Dublin, where the country is ravaged by war and disease. When there was no advanced technology, lack of equipments, Nurse Julia Powers works in the maternity ward of an understaffed hospital, full of expectant mothers suffering from an unfamiliar flu. Nurse Julia is doing her best to look after these women along with Doctor Kathleen Lynn and a young volunteer, Bridie Sweeney.
The best thing about this book is the vivid description given by the author, I could literally imagine every situation in this book. The writing style is vivid, moving and beautiful.
I don’t really read this genre, but I really liked this book. I am really new to this author, even though I have heard alot of her books.
I liked the character of the protagonist, she is analytical, skilled and experienced, she knows what’s going on and she trying to do her best. As a nurse, she has experienced many situations and death was one of them. Facing death is not new to her, but every time it leaves a void in her. I really liked the fact that the whole plot takes place in only three days is fantastic. The author has vividly narrated the suffering of the people, the problems faced by doctors and nurses, death, love and loss.
It is not the kind of book you can devour at once, it comes to you slowly and it takes into the lives of these nurses and patients along the intensity of the lives of these women, who in this fearful situation, are doing what they can do, dealing with pain and loss of patients and changing the lives of each other.
