Mariam, a 15 year old girl, is an illegitimate daughter of Town’s wealthiest man. Living all her life in a hut in the outskirts, she yearns her father’s love and presence, despite her mother’s constant warnings. One day, she runs away to the town to live with her father and meet his family. Disappointed she returns to find her mother dead and regrets her actions. After a short period of living with her father, she was sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed.

Laila, daughter of a former professor, grew up in the presence of luxuries, books and independence. But after her brothers went to fight in the war, Laila was forced to live in the shadow of her brothers absence and was desperate for her mother’s attention. In the midst of this, she strikes a close friendship with a local crippled boy, Tariq.

Mariam and Laila belongs to a very different background and upbringing. Mariam, now a middle age women, befriends Laila as they both became a victim of suffering, brutality and violence from their husband, Rasheed. How will their lives change when love and friendship takes unexpected turns?

My Opinion: Truly heartbreaking… Hosseini is a master storyteller, who reveals us the lives and sufferings of Afghani women. Throughout the story, he contrast between the two women, who belonged to a very different background. I am already a fan of Hosseini’s works. I can’t help but recommend this book to every reader..Much appreciated and recommended.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
